Christmas Part II

Later on Christmas Day, Dave, Ambrose and I made our way back to our house and joined Nana and Papa Streit along with Uncle Gody, Auntie Naomi and cousin Emma. The kids opened their toys and we enjoyed a lasagna dinner.

Emma and Ambrose had lots of fun playing together, particularly going for rides on the lil tykes push car.

ride em cars are fun!

Boxing Day was spent just hanging out. Shirley and Emma went to the Nutcracker with friend Lou and her granddaugher Chloe.  The next day Shirley and Abby headed off to Mitchell and Ambrose and I went to my mom and dad's to visit gramma and eat some leftovers and dainties.

Christmas Part 1 (updated)

On December 21 and 22 had a lovely visit with Natasha, Matt and their boys Max and Isaac. They drove from Calgary to spend the holidays with Tasha's parents. It was great to see an old friend and her family. Dave had fun wrestling with the boys and Ambrose was quite pleased to play with the boys.
Max and Isaac

On the 22nd my mom, Breanna, Ambrose and I drove to Erickson to pick up Gramma. We spent the night and the next day we visited my Auntie Darlene and Uncle Brian in Brandon. Their kids (my cousins) were in town for Christmas. Ambrose got to meet Jeri, Scott and their boys Brady and Chase from Vancouver (Ambrose was fascinated by Brady's braces); Jody and Kevin from Calgary; Tara from Vernon, BC and of course, Claire Bear with parents Moog and Janine were in from Ottawa. It was a lovely visit but unfortunately I do not have any pictures to share and I now have pictures to share (thanks for sending them Janine!)

Christmas eve was spent at my parent's house. David's parents arrived that day from The Pas and joined us for the festive feast (my mom began preparing dinner two weeks before Christmas). It was a lovely meal followed by some serious gift opening (we open our gifts on the eve).

Dave, Ambrose and I spent the night at nana and papa's house. We awoke to discover that Ambrose received gifts from Santa! Later that morning we enjoyed fried pault, a swedish dish that is part of our Christmas tradition. Yum!

December so far

loves the Christmas lights
Bizzy Bizzy Bizzy Baby!!

Observations and Milestones:

  • Cut left central incisor while we were away and the right one is on the way.
  • Climbing stairs and motoring around quite nicely.
  • Has perfected his soft hug.
  • Loves to laugh and clap his hands.
  • Waves like the Queen on a float - back of hand to the crowd.
  • Shakes his bum bum when the music hits.
  • Likes to call out to strangers for a "HEY!"
  • Very vocal. Sings with mom. Sings himself to sleep.
  • High Fives are coming along nicely.

Since getting back from Mexico, we have worked hard at organizing the living room and dining room. As a result the living room is now Ambrose readied. Our friends Natasha, Matt and their two boys, Max and Isaac stayed over for a night and the living room was well tested by the 5 and 3 year old.  Ambrose is fascinated with "older" children; he watched these two rough house and play with great interest.  Isaac (the younger of the two) treated Ambrose like a little brother or cousin and let him know when he was getting in the way or being annoying.

other December highlights:
-Nana Shirley visit (attending Daddy's hockey game and visiting Fort Whyte) and visits with Uncle Gody, Auntie Naomi and cousin Emma
-lots of visits with Nana Arlette
-shopping with Auntie Brytt
-visits with friends Luna (Collin and Natasha) and Samuel (Karel and Christy and other friends)
-attending Mommy's work holiday potluck
-attending Daddy's VIA family Christmas party and hockey Christmas party
-chilling with Uncle Gord
-trimming the Christmas tree
-passed the nubbie ball back and forth with daddy three times. was almost as pleased with himself as daddy was.
-Loves the little 80's synthesizer. does bum bum dance and shakes head. just scours all the buttons while different background rythmes stop and start. Manages to get the sample song going. video to arrive soon.

Ambrose meets Santa (plus updates on baby)

While we were shopping yesterday afternoon with Nana and Auntie Brytt, Ambrose met Santa.  The exchange was quite pleasant actually. While sitting on Santa's knee, Ambrose turned his head and looked up at Santa with much curiosity. He also grabbed a piece of Santa's beard and proceeded to play with it. We have plans to meet Father Christmas at Fort Whyte on Sunday.

Other updates...
Ambrose is now 8 months old and he weighs 23 pounds. He is busy baby, always on the move.  He loves to walk with assistance or cruise around and move between furniture and/or people (or, if they let him, the cats). He likes to throw/push toys ahead and then move towards them while playing. A favourite toy is the Fisher Price farm from Jessie. He spends equal time playing with the animals and standing up holding onto the farm (no, it does not hold his weight and he has taken some tumbles but he persists).

His new thing is to scream at the top of his lungs, usually in delight (he demonstrated this quite well while we were on the plane). He is experimenting with some new sounds and vocalizations. In fact I don't think he is ever quiet (even in a deep sleep he will sing his deep slumber song).

His interest in food has deepened just these past few days. Although he still prefers to feed himself, he is finally allowing me to feed him more than 1-2 spoonfuls in one sitting. In fact last night he ate over half a jar of organic pureed pears! He does not hesitate to let us know if he likes or dislikes a certain food. Here's the running tally for this week
Likes: puffed wheat, rice crackers, pureed blueberries, homemade banana bread, chunks of steamed carrot and anything he can pick up and put into his mouth himself.
Dislikes: apple sauce (really?), rice cereal, any pureed vegetable (ugh)

Mexico (7 months con't) November 15-27

Vacation destination: Ryan and Manon's casa in Chemuyil, a great little town between Playa del Carmen and Tulum.

David and I will have to come back to this post to complete a write up that does justice to our wonderful trip.

In the meantime - and to satisfy the calls for Ambrose on the beach shots - here are some pictures of our Mexican getaway. Some of the photos were taken with Ryan or Gord's GoPro, a super cool sports cam.

7 months

We were busy the first two weeks of November preparing for our trip to Mexico (next blog). But we managed to have some nice visits with friends and family, including my girlies, and particularly Miss T before she left.
At the beginning of the month, Ambrose weighed in at 22 pounds.

Weeks 28, 29 and 30 - Guess who's crawling?!!

This month has been a blur. We are so behind posting updates!

So here's what I recall happened for the rest of the month of October....

-Ambrose had his 6 month immunizations (he took the needles like a champ).
-He weighed in at 21 pounds 12.5 ounces, 29 inches tall and head circumference of 46.5 inches (which means he's a tall heavy baby with a large head!)
Pumpkin time with cousin Emma
-We went to a potluck last Saturday (Oct 23) and our little baby decided to pull out a party trick to entertain the crown: he crawled! We are now frantically trying to baby proof the house.
-Ambrose's new thing is to shake his head no. It's hilarious! We are trying to teach him to nod yes instead but to no avail.
Thanksgiving with cousin Jessie
-Babes and I have been busy attending our weekly classes: baby boot camp with Christy and Samuel (afterwards we enjoy breakfast with Michelle who joins us after her swim), starfish/duck swim lessons with Tomoko and Ren, and mom and me yoga.
-Ambie continues to be incredibly vocal. He still sings himself to sleep when he's in the car seat or stroller. He also 'talks' when playing with toys.
Luna and Ambrose sittin' in a tree
-'tinky loves loves loves to cruise around furniture and people, particularly me. He is very active, moving around sitting, scooting, crawling, climbing....
-He likes to stand and shake his bum-bum to music.
-We have observed early hand clapping.
-We enjoyed a lovely Thanksgiving dinner outside at Auntie Brytt and Uncle Earl's house. Ambie had a nice visit with cousin Jessie who has been generously giving her baby cousin toys that she has outgrown. Thank you Miss Jessie!

-Fun visits with Collin, Natasha and Luna; Auntie Tamara; Uncle Gody and miss Emma; Nana, Papa and Auntie Brooke; Renee and Dan; Christoff; Auntie Wendy; neighbours; and skype dates with Auntie Des....
-My mom and I took Ambrose for professional photos  - can't wait to get them back!

solid foods!

Once we arrived back from our trip I started feeding Ambrose solid foods on a more regular basis (1-2 times a day). He has eaten the following foods: bananas, rice cereal, carrots, sweet potato, pumpkin, apple sauce, peaches, and green peas. He likes to feed himself and his pincer grip is improving daily. He enjoys feeding himself cheerios, quinoa, noodles, puffed wheats, puffed rice and baby mum mums.

Check out the picture gallery for some great shots of Ambrose enjoying (or not enjoying) some new taste sensations!

Weeks 25, 26, 27 - continuation of trip post

After we went to Dunham (Emile's parent's home), Dave and I headed to visit Moog (my cousin), Janine, and Jenna Claire. It was so much fun to just hang out with the babies! We spent two nights and had a lovely time. We snuck in a visit with Dave's friends Dan and Maggie and their adorable little baby girl Chloe. (ottawa pics, including bum bum shots!)
with Moog and Claire bear

with Eva
We then took a train from Ottawa (where Ambrose charmed an entire Japanese tour group, smiling and posing for multiple pictures) and headed to Toronto. Dave and I could not believe that we were only half way through our trip! We rented a car and headed to Sheryl, Derek and Eva's home.

After our nice visit in TO we took a road trip to Muskoka for some R and R at Alicia and Emad's absolutely amazing cottage! Great food, great company. (pics: TO and Muskoka)

We then headed back and took the train home - in high style (we had the best room). Ambrose demonstrated that he loves to travel!

25 weeks - First teeth! First Airplane ride!

-Ambrose cut his first tooth (bottom central incisor) last Wednesday (or so) and the second bottom central incisor promptly emerged through the gum as well. His drooling has tapered off significantly but a bib is still required.

-We left for Ottawa to visit Auntie Des and Uncle Emile on Friday morning. They live in Hull/Gatineau area.
Ambrose was a perfectly behaved baby on the plane. We were the last to board and you could see the passengers around us looking at us nervously but Ambrose demonstrated that he is indeed a laid back babe. I suppose we could fault him for being too loud in his expressions of happiness (some high pitched squeals). One women, seated ahead and to the left of us, looked back often to steal a look at Ambrose.
first night at Desiree and Emile's

with Auntie Des
-Desiree picked us up from the airport and spirited us away to her and Emile's home. And the fun began.

Jack - John and Krista's son
The next day we drove to Wakefield, where we visited John, Krista and their little boy Jack. They fed us a wonderful meal of bread, cheese, white radishes, cucumbers and other items picked up from the local market, which we later visited. We were also introduced to a wonderful wine made from honey called Mead. Dave made a "bee line" to the honey booth at the market and said I know John Parker and exchanged cash for a 'blackmarket" bottle of mead.
-At the market we listened - and Des and Ambrose danced - to the sounds of drumming (the weekend market also included the Harvest Festival which celebrated the area's Aboriginal roots).
Dad and Ambrose
at the Black Sheep
-we enjoyed afternoon beers (St. Ambroise pale and stout) on the patio of the legendary Black Sheep. Ambrose caught the eyes of all of the passer-bys and other patio dwellers.
-We later had a dinner at a microbrewery in Hull which had fabulous beer (or so I was told - nursing moms are not able to indulge as freely).
-The next morning we rose early to start our road trip. We enjoyed an amazing breakfast at the Sparrow on St Laurent in Montreal, a trendy new place that serves amazing breaksfast. Emile's university friend was our server and made the gastronomical adventure more special. While waiting for our seat, Dave, babe and Emile picked up montreal bagels at one of the oldest bagel shops, Fairmount Bagel.
At Bernice's Art Studio

Ambrose was allowed to touch the painting! yay for textures!
-we resumed our journey to Emile's parent's, Yvon and Bernice's,  home in the eastern townships, a small town called Dunham. After saying a quick hello to the slowly gathering guests for Emile's father's 70th birthday celebration, we went to his mother's studio space at an old church (which she bought and lovingly restored and retrofitted with help from family and friends). We spent the afternoon admiring her art (she's a very talended artist). Dave and I were quite taken by a few pieces of her work and we managed to select one to bring home (at the family discount - so lucky!)
-back at the house, Emile's brother Julien and Yann were cooking up a storm, preparing the feast.
-their home is the boy's childhood home which has been under renovation...forever, which gave me great comfort, realizing our own home will never be "finished" and that's okay...
Bernice with sons Yonn and Julie
beginning of the feast!
-Emile gave a tour of his childhood yard.
-Dinner began with an incredible tapas spread. Wine bottles were opened. Food flooded the table.
birthday cake and laughter. Yvon beamed. He exlcaimed many times that this was his best birthday ever.
Yvon - 70 yrs young!
-Dave was cajoled into giving an impromptu speech by Bernice, after she gave her own off the cuff poem. Dave obliged.
-The next day we enjoyed a lovely brunch and were on our way home. The road trip ended with take out poutine and burgers.

Eating rice cereal

Well loyal blog readers, you are in for a treat: A triple header with three blog posts in one day.

I fed Ambrose a very small amount of organic brown rice cereal mixed with mom milk and viola! A happy afternoon treat.

Check out the photo gallery. I somehow managed to feed him while taking a series of shots.

tree cutting, grape harvesting/ wine making and tree banding: Dave's busy life in between train trips

Dave can fill in the details later, but here are the picture galleries for the above mentioned activities:

23 and 24 weeks

It's hard work uploading a post every week! Sorry we're late with these ones.

The past two weeks are a blur to me now, but here are some recalled highlights.
-St. Norberts Farmers Market with Christoff (I'll add another post with photo gallery and Dave can fill in the details later: Christoff taking down a large tree in front of my sister's yard, Dave's afternoon harvesting and pressing grapes with Dan and his friend Pat, and tree banding the neighbourhood)
-visiting and helping nana who has not been feeling well
-lots of visiting with my friends and other babies/kids: Tamara, Christy and Samuel, Kiri and kids, Michelle, Ang - coffee, hanging out, shopping, walks and a movie.
-hanging out with Collin and baby Luna
-breakfast with Nana and Papa

Milestones and observations
-is able to drink water  out of a cup (more or less!)
-roll from tummy to back and back to tummy
-move from sitting to lying on tummy
-if can crawl/climb onto something will move onto his hands and knees
-if can grab onto a ledge, couch or me, can pull himself up from sitting to standing, holding onto something for balance
-can stand and shuffle along furniture (ugh, I think he will indeed be an early walker!!)
-just for fun and taste, has tried mashed banana and a mum mum rice cracker
-likes when you clap or snap for him
-loves to sit on laps and have books read to him, particularly ones that have texture
-still no teeth but drooling continues
-very social - loves to interact with others when we're out and has no problems being held by other people
-however when we're home alone, just the two of us, he cannot get enough attention from me. I leave the room and he has a melt down. When we're sitting on the floor together, he reaches out and touches me while playing (so cute) or has to be climbing all over me (cute but no so great if trying to do things, like putting together this blog post)
-is in love with the cats. Fortunately mineu and hibou tolerate his enthusiastic petting (read: hard pulling of hair)
-loves to bang things on surfaces
-has a range of sounds he likes to make. I particularly like his morning speech (he raises his arm and "speaks" in a low voice and will drop it down to a whisper, and has a very serious look on his face - hilarious!)
