Minneapolis: 10 adults and 7 kids

The kids
This past long weekend we and a group of our friends (5 families) went to Minneapolis to spend time together. Girls' night, guys' night, shared childcare, shopping, amusement rides, aquarium and more shopping....It was a blast!

David is in HEAVEN! A childhood dream come true

Ambrose was such a big boy on the trip he was awarded with an Iron Man action figure - a toy he highly coveted from Samuel.
My girls! We were about to leave for a late dinner. Lots of great conversation, laughter, tears, red wine and fabulous food.

NOLA

Dave and I snuck a quick vacation at the beginning of January. I went to New Orleans for an institute for work and Dave joined me for three nights. We had a great time marvelling at the architecture and history of the French Quarter, the sprawling mansions in the Garden District and the cool vibe of Oak Street home to the infamous Maple Leaf (our intensions was to see the Rebirth Blues Band but we were exhausted and missing our baby by the time the third night rolled around).

We stayed at the Hotel Richelieu in the French Quarter.
The visit would not be complete without a visit to the iconic Cafe Du Monde for a cup of chicory coffee and beignets (french doughnuts). Yum

We were incredulous about the lax liquour laws in thsi city. You can walk around with open alcohol so as long as it is in a plastic cup or can: not glass bottles. Here, the pub we were at provided us with plastic cups to take our beer to go! Dave was quite pleased.

we were in love with the gas lanterns
The food was amazing. I certainly had my fill of fried oysters, here served along side my eggs benny.

The French constructed their homes such that the front of the homes faces inward , apparently it was to ensure they they would never need to open their front door to an Englishman. Un-welcomed guests were greeted at the back of the house. Here you can see what promises to be an sanctuary, a private garden within the courtyard.

July 2012 - Planes, trains and automobiles

In July we boarded a plane and headed to Ottawa to start our whirlwind vacation. First stop was second cousin Claire's house (Moog and Janine).

We had a fabulous time enjoying their new home and the amenities (read: backyard pool!). We had a great time with the Andersons! Thanks for the hospitality and the yummy meal!

Next stop was Gatineau and for a quick visit at Auntie Des and Uncle Emile's new house. Nana and Papa were there waiting for us. We then got into our cars - rental or otherwise - and 'caravaned' it to Dunham in the Quebec Eastern townships. We were there to celebrate Desiree's and Emile's wedding. And celebrate we did. It was a beautiful and magical wedding made even more special with the announcement of Desiree's pregnancy (we knew ahead of time but we were now able to share the news!).

We rented a cabin close to Emile's parents. Ambrose had fun with his cousin Emma and new friend Jack. Emile's parents were generous hosts and we loved spending time at their enchanting property including their cozy home and swimming pond! The pictures of the wedding may speak for themselves: outdoor, big tent, fabulous food amazing performances (including members of the Geoffroy family). And dance party! Ambrose started us off by gallop dancing around the stage. He LOVED dancing in front of the crowd.

Post-wedding, we drove back to Gatineau and spent the night at the newlyweds home (sans the couple, it was just our small family). We left the next morning on a train headed to Toronto.

Upon our arrival,  we headed immediately to my friend Sheryl's where were stayed the night with her family. Again, wonderful hospitality and delicious food. Ambrose was well taken care of by Eva (yet another beautiful older girl in his life in addition to cousins Jessie and Emma). It was great to see my good friend Sheryl and tootle around Yorkville catching up.

We then took the train home from Toronto to Winnipeg. Ambrose loved traveling by rail and quite capably demonstrated that he has 'train legs'; no issues navigating the bumps and jumps of the train going down the track.

Blue Lake, Ontario - August Long weekend

We had a great time August Long camping at Blue Lake with friends Collin, Natasha and Luna (who is two months younger than Ambrose).

We traveled together in an old truck with a slide on camper pulling a small transport trailer. It was Ambrose's first time camping and sleeping in a tent.

Luna showed Ambrose how fun it is to play in the dirt and Ambrose showed Luna how to be a bit assertive while playing (read: how to shove babies out of the way when they are playing with toys you want or who are too close to mom).

The two made up a dynamic duo who charmed the fellow campers. They discovered that is a lot of fun to take chairs for a walk!

Toronto visit

Ambrose and I headed to Toronto on June 17 and arrived home on the 22. Dave got off the train as we were leaving. It was a long 6 days for Dave to be away from us. I kindly left him a to do list entitled "David's home alone to do list" but he explained later he was too distraught to complete much of the tasks beyond yard work (which has now been made easier by our recent acquisition of second hand electric mower and weed whacker (whipper snipper?)

The Toronto visit was fantastic as I got to visit with my girlies. Tamara is in from St Maarten and got to see her everyday. We stayed with Sheryl and family and I got to finally meet Mia, their 5 month old. It was great to catch up. I was in Toronto to also attend a conference for work. Miss T generously booked time off work to care for Ambrose while I took in the sessions! My boss Lynn was excited to spend time with Mr A so we took him to the conference banquet!

On a much sober note, the weekend I was there was to be Alicia and Emad's wedding. Unfortunately, Alicia found out that she has breast cancer 6 months before her wedding date (she has jokingly stated that she plans to start buying lottery tickets as the odds of that happening are pretty slim).  She has already gone for surgery and will be starting chemo on July 11. She is such a strong woman and I admire her ability to keep her sense of humour through this ordeal. She has such a positive outlook and knows she will kick cancer's ass. Thankfully,  it was detected early and things looks very good for a full recovery.

Mexico (7 months con't) November 15-27

Vacation destination: Ryan and Manon's casa in Chemuyil, a great little town between Playa del Carmen and Tulum.

David and I will have to come back to this post to complete a write up that does justice to our wonderful trip.

In the meantime - and to satisfy the calls for Ambrose on the beach shots - here are some pictures of our Mexican getaway. Some of the photos were taken with Ryan or Gord's GoPro, a super cool sports cam.

Weeks 25, 26, 27 - continuation of trip post

After we went to Dunham (Emile's parent's home), Dave and I headed to visit Moog (my cousin), Janine, and Jenna Claire. It was so much fun to just hang out with the babies! We spent two nights and had a lovely time. We snuck in a visit with Dave's friends Dan and Maggie and their adorable little baby girl Chloe. (ottawa pics, including bum bum shots!)

We then took a train from Ottawa (where Ambrose charmed an entire Japanese tour group, smiling and posing for multiple pictures) and headed to Toronto. Dave and I could not believe that we were only half way through our trip! We rented a car and headed to Sheryl, Derek and Eva's home.

After our nice visit in TO we took a road trip to Muskoka for some R and R at Alicia and Emad's absolutely amazing cottage! Great food, great company. (pics: TO and Muskoka)

We then headed back and took the train home - in high style (we had the best room). Ambrose demonstrated that he loves to travel!

25 weeks - First teeth! First Airplane ride!

-Ambrose cut his first tooth (bottom central incisor) last Wednesday (or so) and the second bottom central incisor promptly emerged through the gum as well. His drooling has tapered off significantly but a bib is still required.

-We left for Ottawa to visit Auntie Des and Uncle Emile on Friday morning. They live in Hull/Gatineau area.
Ambrose was a perfectly behaved baby on the plane. We were the last to board and you could see the passengers around us looking at us nervously but Ambrose demonstrated that he is indeed a laid back babe. I suppose we could fault him for being too loud in his expressions of happiness (some high pitched squeals). One women, seated ahead and to the left of us, looked back often to steal a look at Ambrose.
first night at Desiree and Emile's

with Auntie Des
-Desiree picked us up from the airport and spirited us away to her and Emile's home. And the fun began.

Jack - John and Krista's son
The next day we drove to Wakefield, where we visited John, Krista and their little boy Jack. They fed us a wonderful meal of bread, cheese, white radishes, cucumbers and other items picked up from the local market, which we later visited. We were also introduced to a wonderful wine made from honey called Mead. Dave made a "bee line" to the honey booth at the market and said I know John Parker and exchanged cash for a 'blackmarket" bottle of mead.
-At the market we listened - and Des and Ambrose danced - to the sounds of drumming (the weekend market also included the Harvest Festival which celebrated the area's Aboriginal roots).
Dad and Ambrose
at the Black Sheep
-we enjoyed afternoon beers (St. Ambroise pale and stout) on the patio of the legendary Black Sheep. Ambrose caught the eyes of all of the passer-bys and other patio dwellers.
-We later had a dinner at a microbrewery in Hull which had fabulous beer (or so I was told - nursing moms are not able to indulge as freely).
-The next morning we rose early to start our road trip. We enjoyed an amazing breakfast at the Sparrow on St Laurent in Montreal, a trendy new place that serves amazing breaksfast. Emile's university friend was our server and made the gastronomical adventure more special. While waiting for our seat, Dave, babe and Emile picked up montreal bagels at one of the oldest bagel shops, Fairmount Bagel.
At Bernice's Art Studio

Ambrose was allowed to touch the painting! yay for textures!
-we resumed our journey to Emile's parent's, Yvon and Bernice's,  home in the eastern townships, a small town called Dunham. After saying a quick hello to the slowly gathering guests for Emile's father's 70th birthday celebration, we went to his mother's studio space at an old church (which she bought and lovingly restored and retrofitted with help from family and friends). We spent the afternoon admiring her art (she's a very talended artist). Dave and I were quite taken by a few pieces of her work and we managed to select one to bring home (at the family discount - so lucky!)
-back at the house, Emile's brother Julien and Yann were cooking up a storm, preparing the feast.
-their home is the boy's childhood home which has been under renovation...forever, which gave me great comfort, realizing our own home will never be "finished" and that's okay...

beginning of the feast!
-Emile gave a tour of his childhood yard.
-Dinner began with an incredible tapas spread. Wine bottles were opened. Food flooded the table.
birthday cake and laughter. Yvon beamed. He exlcaimed many times that this was his best birthday ever.
Yvon - 70 yrs young!
-Dave was cajoled into giving an impromptu speech by Bernice, after she gave her own off the cuff poem. Dave obliged.
-The next day we enjoyed a lovely brunch and were on our way home. The road trip ended with take out poutine and burgers.
